Unread messages in Gmail no longer bolded - old eyes need help

I work on a mac and recently added Pages for something specific. Now, my gmail inbox is barely delineating between read and unread email with Sans Serif. I have been researching what to do for days now but no luck. I can't even enable Arial Bold in the Font Book. Does anyone have a suggestion so that I can get back to work more efficiently? I have included a screenshot of an unread message followed by one that has been read for reference. As you can see, there is barely any difference.

Any help would be so appreciated.
